Gloom Cocoon - Pizza Punks Unleashed

Gloom Cocoon - Pizza Punks Unleashed

If you're a fan of pizza and punk, you're in for a treat. Meet Gloom Cocoon, if you haven't already, that is. GC is a "pizza-fueled" 3 piece punk band native to Augusta, GA. They've been a classic staple of the city's punk scene since they formed in 2015. The group's membership includes “Acid Jock” on drums, “Radams Superscar” on guitar, and “Snitch Karma” on bass. All three go back and forth on vocals.

The group has released two other records, but their latest is truly something special. Just last month, GC released Pizza Ghouls 6: Straight to VHS, an entertaining nine track banger.

The album opens up with an atmospheric monologue, titled "Pizza Ghouls 2: Second Rise." It features dialogue between a police officer and a person who witnessed 3 guys get sucked into arcade machines and become pizza ghouls. The second track "Pizza Ghouls 3 & 4," dives into the thematic concept of these pizza ghouls. Snippets of the narrative pop in and out of tracks via spoken word soundbites, and can also be heard in lyrics. I don't want to spoil much more, so you'll have to experience the rest for yourself.

The record was tracked in a "live" setting at Pizza Hell Studios, while vocals were recorded at Chicken Shack Studios to capture natural reverb. As a result, the album sounds raw, yet controlled. It sets the chaotic atmosphere of the record into motion, driving the plot forward.

What it all boils down to is an oddly entertaining pizza-themed musical extravaganza. It feels like an old 50s horror flick meets a DnD session run by scene punks. Pizza Ghouls is different, and that’s clearly on purpose. If you give it a listen, you'll know what I mean.

You can find this crazy adventure on Spotify and Bandcamp, and if you want to learn more about Gloom Cocoon or catch a show, check them out on Facebook.
