A New Equation: Challenger Deep's "Welcome to the Show"
For many like myself that still have bad habits like not straying far from their favorite musical genres, math rock can seem a bit odd at first. Many of us have been conditioned, by current popular music and our parents' influences, to expect certain aural qualities and checkpoints in music. As a result, the atypical chords, time signatures, and general song structures utilized in math rock can be almost too foreign at first, and perhaps even a bit of a turn-off for potential new listeners.
Fortunately for any music fans that may be unsure what this style is all about, Challenger Deep‘s new single "Welcome to the Show" offers a fantastic blend of catchy hooks, startling energy, and electrifying technicality. Jumping out at listeners from the drop, "Welcome to the Show" revs up with a flash of frenzied finger-tapped guitar licks and machine gun-style drumming. After the dust quickly settles, Challenger Deep takes off into a minor-key romp full of punctuated stops, howling reverb-laden guitar, and punchy bass lines.
One of the best elements of the song is the affinity the group demonstrates for changing rhythms within the uptempo 4/4 time signature. From heavy-handed and punishing drum beats to nimble guitar runs that skip across the strings, the tune surprises and satisfies in just under four minutes. What more could you really ask for?
For those who are unfamiliar with Challenger Deep and their style of music, "Welcome to the Show" is a great introduction to what they're all about. The single is available on Spotify and Bandcamp, so do yourself a favor and take a listen.
